Campaign Update – Middle School Band Festival

Campaign Update – Middle School Band Festival

On Thursday, April 4, 2019, 425 students from eight Beaverton middle school bands participated in the first annual district-wide, adjudicated band festival at Southridge High School.  The MS Band Festival was an opportunity for all 8th grade bands in our Beaverton schools to perform for each other and receive scores and feedback from professional adjudicators. Prior to the Festival, the bands submitted pre-assessment recordings, scored by the same three adjudicators, as baseline data. At the Festival, all bands received a performance and a growth score. The Festival served as the last stage of a common assessment.

For many of the students, this was the first festival they ever attended. Having all 8th grade bands perform together helped create a sense of community and pride.  It was highly motivating to students to work toward putting on their best performance.  The feedback from the adjudicators has already been helpful to both teachers and students.

The Festival’s original funding was unexpectedly cut but, with the support of our community through Beaverton’s Choice, the hard work of our students and teachers could be celebrated for all to enjoy. We’re looking forward to next year!
