2014-2015

Experiencing Action through Historical Fiction: $600

Through historical fiction students will be transported to the past in order to learn important life lessons for the present and future. Students will be learning about social activism during a regular school unit, with the central idea: “People express their perspectives through the action they take”. Students will be reading articles about present day people taking action.

2013-2014

Arts for Learning (A4L): $312.50
Award will be used to fund two Arts for Learning units, with an artist in residence in one classroom in each grade 3-5. Arts for Learning integrates standards-focused, text –based content and arts strategies to improve students’ achievement in literacy, learning and life skills.

2012-2013

Digital Discussions: $987
Funding provided through BEF Building STEAM 4 All Program
When students are given more time to think; participation, length and correctness of responses, and test scores increase (Rowe, 1972). The use of iPad Minis and the Edmodo application, students who don’t usually participate verbally, will be given the time and space to formulate thoughtful responses during small group discussions.

Wooden Car: $1,000
Funding provided through the BEF Building STEAM 4 All Program
This project will fund materials for the Beaverton Science Specialist team to go to all 33 elementary schools and teach first grade students a science inquiry lesson. Students will learn about the motion of objects when a force is applied as they wind a rubber band around a wooden car and measure how far it goes over different surfaces.

 

2011-2012

2010-2011

Flipping Our Focus: $1,000
Funding provided through Dave Gettling Technology Fund
Teaching 21st century students requires reaching them in ways that appeal to them. Through the use of Flip cameras students will be able to write scripts supporting school-wide goals, film their work and use the films to improve school-wide focus. Flip cameras will allow students to show improvement in communication skills and knowledge.
